Design Technology

Vision Statement

‘Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future’ –  Robert L. Peters

At Ormiston South Parade Academy, we aim to give our children a solid foundation of planning, preparing and creating products to solve problems, alongside promoting critical thinking for an ever changing world. Our children are encouraged to consider the effectiveness of not only existing products but be able to critically evaluate products they have created independently and with peers. Our children will gain a range of practical skills which will enable them to succeed and in turn, our children will be able to apply these skills in every lesson and everyday life. Every child will have the opportunity to learn and extend their understanding, experience and application in the use of technology, including I.C.T, in a wide range of situations.

The Delivery:

  • Within the classroom, children will have the opportunity to analyse existing products, suggest improvements, question their uses and design their own
  • Teachers will plan D.T. lessons which will link to themes taught across the academy through a history focus
  • Children will explore key events in history as well as the life and work of a range of inspirational people, such as: inventors, engineers and pioneers
  • Children will handle a variety of tools, such as: hacksaws, drills, textile scissors and clay tools, that will develop the skills to design, build and evaluate
  • Children will have the opportunity to use a wide variety of materials and components making their own choices and justifying their decisions according to their characteristics
  • Throughout the academic year children will grasp an understanding of cooking and nutrition through live lessons and a range of multimedia resources
  • Children will develop imaginative thinking to enable them to communicate their ideas about what they like and dislike when designing and making
  • Through each theme foci teachers will plan opportunities to allow children to develop an understanding of technological processes, products, manufacturing and their contribution to our society
