Our topic this half term is, Towers, Tunnels and Turrets!

See the castle ahead? Get ready to invade its mighty walls! Shoot a projectile with an archer’s aim! Head across the drawbridge, over the moat and up to the top of the tower…

Meet Rapunzel who lives in a tall, tall tower. Let’s build a brand new one… Whose is the tallest? Can you measure it?

Literacy

In literacy this term we will be learning to write fairy tales, character descriptions and recounts. We will be focussing on the following skills:

  • Sentences with different forms: statement, question, exclamation, command
  • Expanded noun phrases for description and specification (e.g. the blue butterfly, plain flour, the man in the moon)
  • Capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to demarcate sentences
  • Commas to separate items in a list
  • Apostrophes to mark contracted forms in spelling

Maths

In Maths this term children will focus their learning on the following skills:

  • Number, place value and rounding
  • Count in steps of 2 and 5 from 0 and in tens from any number, forward and backward
  • Recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones)
  • Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
  • Compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100
  • Read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals
  • Use place value and number facts to solve problems

Measurement

  • Compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity
  • Compare and sequence intervals of time

Statistics

  • Ask and answer simple questions by counting the number of objects in each category and sorting the categories by quantity

Science

We will be investigating everyday materials and their uses. We will be working scientifically.

Art

We will be creating observational drawings of castles.

DT

We will be constructing model bridges using a range of materials.

Computing

We will be using iPads and computers to research different facts about castles.

Geography

We will be looking at amazing structures around the world and bridges in the local area.

History

We will be looking at castles and what it would be like living in a castle.

PE

In PE we will be playing defend and attack games.
