Spring Term 1

Welcome to Year Two

Literacy including Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

In literacy children are going to be practicing their reading and writing skills through the book, Zeraffa Giraffa, based on a true story of a Giraffe sent to France in the 1820s. We will be following the journey Zeraffa takes. We will also be exploring a number of different fairy tales and improving our writing in a role and developing our creative responses to a text through the story of The Jolly Postman.

Our Grammar, punctuation and spelling learning will focus on the following skills;

  • Conjunctions
  • Word classes – verbs, adjectives, adverbs and nouns.
  • Time openers (first, next, then etc)
  • Sentence types
  • Punctuation – exclamation marks, question marks, commas and apostrophes.
  • Suffixes


In Maths this term children will focus our learning on the following skills;

  • Money
  • Place value
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Multiplication and division
  • Arithmetic skills

Community Champions

In topic this term your child will become a Grimsby expert!

We will be learning all about the geography of our town, country and continent. We will be delving into the history of our local area and finding out all about Grimsby’s fishing heritage. We will be exploring the local area and learning about what makes our community special. We will be comparing our community to others in the UK and further afield.

Science:  We will be investigating and learning about the essential needs of humans and animals, such as exercise, diet and hygiene.

Art/ Design Technology:  We will be looking at famous local artists as well as creating our own art based on the local area.

ICT: We will be using iPads and computers to research how Grimsby has changed over the past 100 years.

PE: We will be taking part in multi-skills, this will improve our coordination, balance and team work skills.

RE: This half term we will begin looking at caring for our world and trying to answer the question ‘How can we keep the world special?’
